Penang, specifically
- George Town: Solid 5G across the UNESCO quarter. The shophouse streets are two storeys, so unlike Venice or Alfama they cause no trouble.
- The two bridges: Both the Penang Bridge and the 24 km Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah bridge hold signal across - long spans over open water with masts at both ends.
- Penang Hill: The funicular and the summit are covered. The jungle trails up the side lose it, and the Habitat canopy walk is patchy.
- Batu Ferringhi and the north coast: The hotel strip is covered. The national park at the far west - Teluk Bahang, Monkey Beach - thins out and the coastal trails have gaps.

Where to buy a SIM card in Penang?
Counters at the airport and outlets in Gurney Plaza and Komtar. Malaysian lines have to be registered against an identity document, so take your passport.
Is there signal in Penang National Park?
In places. The park at the northwest corner is jungle and the coastal trails to Monkey Beach and the turtle sanctuary have gaps - it is a couple of hours' walk each way, or a boat. Download the trail before you set off; it is easy to misjudge the tide and the daylight.
Does the plan cover Langkawi as well?
Yes - both are Malaysian, so one plan covers Penang, Langkawi and the ferry route between them. The crossing itself is nearly three hours and loses signal in the middle.
