How much mobile data you need

What's the best eSIM for Marrakech?

  • Long weekend – 3 GB

    Navigating the medina, translation, photographs.

  • A week – 10 GB

Maps, calls, and booking the next riad.

  • Marrakech, Fes, the desert – 20 GB

A longer loop on one plan.

  • Working from a riad – Unlimited

Tethering when the riad Wi-Fi gives up.

Coverage and network

Where it works, and where it does not

Morocco mobile networks

Morocco has spent heavily on mobile infrastructure and the cities show it - Marrakech, Casablanca and Rabat are well served. The gap is geographic rather than technical: the Atlas passes and the pre-Sahara are thinly covered by anyone. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Marrakech in practice

  • Inside the medina: Coverage reaches the souks, but the alleys are narrow and roofed in places, so it stutters exactly when you are lost and need it. Riads often sit behind thick walls - most have their own Wi-Fi for that reason.
  • Gueliz and Hivernage: The newer districts behave like any European city. No issues around the hotels or on the main boulevards.
  • Atlas day trips and the desert road: Ourika and Imlil hold on in the valleys. Over the Tizi n'Tichka toward Aït Benhaddou you lose it for long stretches, and desert camps near Merzouga have nothing at all.

Coast, cities and desert

One plan for the whole country - Fes, Chefchaouen, Essaouira - which suits Morocco, since few people only see Marrakech.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Marrakech?

Menara Airport has Maroc Telecom and Orange kiosks in arrivals. Airport prices run higher than in the city. A travel eSIM like Ohayu skips the counter - install before you fly and after landing it can connect you to supported networks like Maroc Telecom, Orange, or Inwi.

Do I need to show ID to buy a SIM card in Marrakech?

Yes - Morocco requires passport registration for all prepaid SIM cards. Travel eSIMs like Ohayu are data-only and do not require this registration.

Will it work in the desert or Atlas Mountains?

Coverage exists along main routes and towns, but remote desert camps and mountain trails can have limited or no signal - true for every carrier. Download maps and key info before heading out.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Marrakech?

Inside the medina, step into a wider street or courtyard before assuming a fault - the alleys block signal. Otherwise confirm the Ohayu eSIM is your data line, roaming is on, then cycle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
