How much mobile data you need
What's the best eSIM for Marseille?
A city weekend – 3 GB

A week in Provence – 10 GB
Aix, Cassis, the Luberon by car.
The Riviera too – 20 GB
Nice, Monaco, Cannes on one plan.
Working from Marseille – Unlimited
Tethering a laptop from a café.
Coverage and network
Coverage from the Vieux-Port to the Calanques
France mobile networks
France runs about 143 Mbps on mobile and ranks 31st worldwide, and Marseille sits close to that average rather than above it. All three operators have dense 5G across the city. What changes the picture here is limestone: the calanques east of town are steep, narrow and mostly unserved once you drop into them.

Marseille, specifically
- Vieux-Port, Le Panier, Cours Julien: Solid 5G. The narrow stepped streets in Le Panier are fine - the buildings are low enough not to shadow much.
- The Calanques: This is the real gap. Sormiou, Morgiou and En-Vau are cut into limestone cliffs, and signal typically goes as you descend the last stretch to the water. Download the trail before you set off - the paths are easy to lose and the GR98 markers are not always obvious.
- Notre-Dame de la Garde: Excellent, as you would expect from the highest point in the city. Good place to reload anything you need offline later.
- Ferries to the Frioul islands and Château d'If: Coverage holds for the short crossing, then works on both islands. The Calanques boat trips further east lose it.
- Stade Vélodrome on match day: 67,000 people in one bowl. Uploads crawl from about an hour before kickoff until well after the final whistle.
France, and the EU
The plan covers all of France - Provence, the Riviera, Paris - and EU roaming rules carry the same terms into Italy or Spain if you keep going.

Arriving in Marseille
Airport Wi-Fi at MRS
Marseille Provence runs a free open network across both terminals. It is enough to check into a hotel or order a taxi, but the airport is 25 km from the centre and the shuttle bus is where you will actually want data.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Marseille?
Orange, SFR and Bouygues all have stores on La Canebière and in the Centre Bourse mall, and the tabacs sell prepaid vouchers. There is a counter at the airport but the selection is thin and the pricing is not good.
Do I need ID to buy a prepaid SIM in France?
Yes. France requires every mobile line to be identified, so a passport at the counter is standard and the shop keeps a record. Nothing about that is difficult, it is just a stop you have to make during opening hours. An Ohayu plan carries no French number, so the requirement does not reach it.
Will I have signal hiking in the Calanques?
Not dependably, and this is the one thing worth planning for in Marseille. The calanques are steep limestone inlets and the signal usually goes in the last descent to the water - Sormiou and Morgiou both do this. Save your map offline, agree a meeting point with anyone you are separated from, and do not count on being reachable between the plateau and the beach.
eSIM not working in Marseille?
Down in a calanque or below the cliffs there may be nothing in range - walk back up to the plateau. In the city, the usual cause is the phone still using your home line: set Ohayu for mobile data, allow roaming, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
