Coverage and network
Honest about coverage
Australia mobile networks
Australia ranks 41st globally for mobile download speed at 116 Mbps. Perth has solid 5G across the metro area, but it is the most isolated major city in the world - once you leave the suburbs, the distances between towers get real. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Real Perth conditions
- CBD, Northbridge & Fremantle: Strong 5G across the city centre, Northbridge, Cottesloe, and Fremantle. Coverage is consistent along the Swan River and the coastal suburbs.
- Rottnest Island & ferries: Rottnest has coverage around the settlement and main bike routes, though it thins on the western end of the island. Ferry crossings hold signal most of the way.
- Long drives out of the city: This is the honest catch with Perth. Heading north up the Coral Coast, east across the Wheatbelt, or out toward the Nullarbor, you will hit genuine dead zones for long stretches. Download maps and bookings before you leave town.
One eSIM, the whole country
Perth is just the start - this eSIM covers all of Australia. Keep the same plan for Sydney, Melbourne, or a trip down to Margaret River.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Perth?
Perth Airport has Telstra and Optus kiosks in the international arrivals area, and there are carrier stores in the CBD and at Westfield Carousel. Airport prices run above city retail. If you would rather skip the counter, a travel eSIM like Ohayu installs before you fly and after landing it can connect you to supported networks like Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone.
Do I need ID to buy a prepaid SIM in Australia?
Yes. ACMA rules in force since 2017 require photo ID before a prepaid service is activated, and a passport covers it. Ohayu plans are data-only with no Australian number, so there is nothing to register.
Will it work on the drive north or out to the Nullarbor?
Partly. Coverage follows the towns and main highways, but Western Australia has huge gaps between them - expect long stretches with no signal on the Coral Coast run, the Wheatbelt, and especially the Nullarbor. This is true for every carrier and every SIM, local or travel. Download offline maps before you go.
Why isn't my eSIM working in Perth?
Once you leave the coastal strip - the Pinnacles road, the wheatbelt - gaps are long. If the cause is not local, make sure Ohayu is your data line and roaming is switched on, then cycle Airplane mode once. If it stays down, chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
