Coverage and network

Coverage around the harbour

Australia mobile networks

Australia averages 116 Mbps at 41st worldwide, with Sydney at 128 Mbps. What is worth knowing here is how much of the city sits on water: ferries, headlands and harbour beaches all behave a bit differently from a normal street grid. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Sydney, specifically

  • CBD, Surry Hills, Bondi: Strong across the centre and the eastern beaches, indoors as well as out.
  • Ferries and the harbour: The Manly and Parramatta River runs keep signal almost the whole way, since you are never far from a built-up shore.
  • Trains and the Metro: Covered on the suburban network and through the newer Metro tunnels. The older underground sections around Town Hall and Wynyard can dip between stations.
  • Blue Mountains: Katoomba and Leura are fine. The moment you drop below the escarpment on a bushwalk it goes, and the Grand Canyon track has nothing.

New South Wales and beyond

The plan works nationwide, so Melbourne, Brisbane or a Tasmania leg are already included.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Sydney?

Vodafone and Optus have kiosks in T1 international arrivals during busy periods, and Telstra has a store on the departures side. Airport prices run A$30-60; supermarkets in the city are cheaper. An eSIM skips the stop.

Do I need ID to buy a prepaid SIM in Australia?

Yes. Prepaid services in Australia have to be identity-checked before activation, under an ACMA determination that has been in force since 2017. A passport is accepted at the counter. Ohayu plans are data-only with no Australian number issued, so nothing needs registering.

Does it work on the ferries and in the Blue Mountains?

Ferries, yes - the harbour runs stay in range of built-up shoreline almost throughout. The Blue Mountains are split: the towns along the ridge are covered, but descending into the valleys on a bushwalk loses it quickly. Download trail maps before you set off.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Sydney?

Confirm the Ohayu eSIM is your data line and that roaming is on for it, then cycle Airplane mode once. If you are below the escarpment in the Blue Mountains there may be no coverage to find. Chat and support@ohayu.com run 24/7.
