  • A week in the Riau Islands – 10 GB

    Batam plus Java or Bali.

  • Working or on business – Unlimited

    Tethering in the industrial parks.

Coverage and network

Coverage on the island, and where it ends

Indonesia mobile networks

Batam is an hour by ferry from Singapore and runs as a free trade zone, which has made it an industrial and weekend-break island rather than a typical Indonesian destination. The developed north and centre are well covered. The thing to get right here is which country's network you are on.

Batam, specifically

  • Nagoya, Batam Centre, Batu Ampar: Consistent 4G with 5G in parts. The commercial districts and the industrial parks are properly served.
  • The ferry terminals: Sekupang, Batam Centre and Harbour Bay are all covered, which matters because ferry schedules change and the terminals are not well signed.
  • Crossing to Singapore: An Indonesian plan does not cover Singapore. The crossing takes about an hour and plenty of people do it as a day trip without thinking about data - you need a separate Singapore plan, or you are relying on Wi-Fi at the other end.
  • Barelang bridges and the south: The chain of bridges south towards Galang is covered along the road. The smaller islands at the end and the mangrove areas thin out.
  • Onward to Bintan: The Bintan ferry stays in Indonesian coverage, so the same plan works there - a different situation from the Singapore run.

Indonesia, not Singapore

The plan covers all of Indonesia, Batam and Bintan included. Singapore is an hour away by boat and needs its own plan.

Arriving on Batam

Airport and ferry terminal Wi-Fi

Hang Nadim provides free Wi-Fi in the departure areas, though it publishes no network name. Most visitors arrive by ferry from Singapore instead, where you clear immigration into a terminal with no reliable public network at all.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Does an Indonesia plan work in Singapore?

No. Batam is about an hour from Singapore by ferry and the two are entirely separate markets, so an Indonesian plan ends when you clear immigration. If your trip is really Singapore-with-a-Batam-weekend, you need both. Coverage holds right up to the terminal on the Indonesian side.

Where to buy a SIM card on Batam?

Operator outlets in Nagoya and the Batam Centre malls, and counters at Hang Nadim. Passport required. If you have arrived by ferry for a weekend, the errand eats a chunk of a short trip.

Will my phone stop working here? The IMEI question

Only if you use a locally issued SIM. Indonesia checks handset IMEIs against a national register and cuts unregistered phones off local networks within hours. Foreign-issued roaming plans are exempt as inbound roaming, so an Ohayu eSIM is not affected and needs no registration.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working on Batam?

First check you have not crossed to Singapore - that is outside the plan entirely. On the island, confirm Ohayu is selected for mobile data with roaming allowed, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
