Coverage and network
Coverage around the airport and the delta
Indonesia mobile networks
Sidoarjo is a regency immediately south of Surabaya, and most visitors pass through it without noticing - Juanda airport is here, in the Sedati district. It is flat, densely populated and industrial, and the coverage reflects that: consistent across the built-up parts, thinner over the fish ponds.

Sidoarjo, specifically
- Around Juanda and Sedati: Well covered. This is the busiest airport in East Java and the network around it is built for the traffic.
- Sidoarjo town and the Porong road: Solid 4G. The main road north into Surabaya holds signal the whole way.
- The Lapindo mud flow: Porong has been the site of an active mud volcano since 2006, which buried several villages and is still contained behind embankments. It is an odd, bleak thing that people do visit. Coverage reaches the viewing embankments; there is nothing built out over the flow itself.
- The shrimp and fish ponds: The coastal strip east of town is a mosaic of aquaculture ponds with few masts. Signal drops between the access tracks.
- Commuting to Surabaya: The Porong-Waru corridor is one of the busiest commuter routes in Java and congests badly. Coverage is fine; the journey is the problem.
All of Indonesia

Arriving in Sidoarjo
Juanda is in Sidoarjo, not Surabaya
Flights sold as Surabaya land at Juanda, which sits in Sedati district here in Sidoarjo, about 12 km from the city. Free terminal Wi-Fi is available. If you are staying locally rather than heading into Surabaya, you are already where you need to be.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sidoarjo the same as Surabaya?
No, they are separate. Sidoarjo is its own regency south of the city, and the two run together into one built-up area along the Waru corridor - which is why Juanda airport carries Surabaya's name while sitting in Sidoarjo's Sedati district. If a hotel booking says 'Surabaya airport area', it is probably here.
Where to buy a SIM card in Sidoarjo?
Operator counters at Juanda and outlets in the Sidoarjo malls, or GraPARI in Surabaya if you want the full range. Passport needed, and note the handset IMEI requirement below - between the two errands you can lose an afternoon.
What is the IMEI rule and does it affect me?
Indonesia blocks handsets that are not on its national IMEI register from local networks, usually within hours of an Indonesian SIM being inserted. It applies to locally issued SIMs and eSIMs. It does not apply to a foreign-issued roaming plan like Ohayu, which Customs counts as inbound roaming - so there is nothing to register and nothing to be cut off from.
eSIM not working in Sidoarjo?
Out over the fish ponds east of town there are real gaps between tracks. Elsewhere, make Ohayu the line used for mobile data, allow roaming for it, then flip Airplane mode once. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
