Coverage and network
Coverage across the capital
Indonesia mobile networks
Indonesia averages about 63 Mbps and sits 72nd worldwide, so this is mid-table rather than fast. Jakarta is the best-served part of the country by a distance - Telkomsel and XL both run 5G across the central business districts - and the numbers drop noticeably once you leave Java.

Jakarta, specifically
- Sudirman, Kuningan, Menteng: Strong 5G through the CBD. The tower density here is unlike anywhere else in Indonesia.
- Stuck in traffic: Which you will be. Jakarta's congestion is the defining feature of getting anywhere, and it is where the connection earns its money - ride-hailing, rerouting, and telling someone you are still 40 minutes away. Coverage along the toll roads and main arteries holds up.
- The MRT and commuter rail: The MRT tunnels between Bundaran HI and Senayan carry a signal. The older KRL commuter lines are above ground and fine, though carriages get packed enough that using a phone is the harder problem.
- Kota Tua and Glodok: Covered. The old town's low colonial buildings and the narrow lanes in Glodok cause no real trouble.
- Flood season: January and February bring flooding that closes roads and occasionally takes local power out, which takes cells with it. Have offline maps in the wet season and expect detours.
All of Indonesia
One plan covers the whole archipelago - Java, Bali, Lombok, Sumatra, Kalimantan - though coverage quality varies a great deal between them.
How to install eSIM
Connected in 3 steps
- 01
Buy before you fly
Choose your data plan before your trip.
- 02
Download & install
Log in to your account, tap your eSIM, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- 03
Land & activate
Activate when you arrive in Indonesia. Turn on roaming for the eSIM and it connects to a local network.
Before you buy, make sure your phone supports eSIM — see Ohayu compatible devices list or dial *#06#. It's a free request to your phone's settings. If you see the EID number — your phone is eSIM-compatible.
Arriving in Jakarta
Airport Wi-Fi at CGK
Soekarno-Hatta runs free Wi-Fi across the terminals with no time limit. Useful, because the airport is 20 km northwest of the centre and the taxi or train decision is one you want to make online.

Frequently asked questions
Will my phone get blocked in Indonesia? The IMEI rule explained
This is the one thing to understand before buying a local SIM here. Since 2020 Indonesia has checked handset IMEIs against a national register, and a phone that is not on it gets cut off from local networks within hours of an Indonesian SIM going in. Travellers do get caught by this.
Customs treats inbound roamers differently: a foreign-issued SIM roaming onto Indonesian networks does not require IMEI registration. An Ohayu plan works that way - it roams as a foreign subscriber and issues no Indonesian number - so the register never comes into it. Buy a locally issued SIM or eSIM and you are inside the rule and need to sort registration out, usually at the airport on arrival.
Where to buy a SIM card in Jakarta?
Official GraPARI outlets for Telkomsel, plus operator counters at the airport and kiosks in every mall. Use the official stores - street vendors cannot complete registration properly, and a badly registered SIM stops working. Take your passport; foreigners register on passport alone, and there is a cap of three SIMs per person.
Is coverage the same outside Java?
No, and the gap is wide. Java and Bali carry most of the network investment. Sumatra and Sulawesi are decent in the cities and thin between them; inland Kalimantan and Papua have long stretches with nothing. Plan around that if your itinerary leaves Java.
eSIM not working in Jakarta?
During wet-season flooding a local cell may simply be without power. Otherwise the usual cause is the phone using the wrong line: set Ohayu as your mobile data SIM, allow roaming, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
