Coverage and network

Honest about coverage

United States mobile networks

The US ranks 10th globally for mobile download speed at 197 Mbps - twice Canada (98 Mbps) and 3× Japan (68 Mbps), where many Hawaii visitors come from. All three US carriers cover Oahu and Maui; remote areas and smaller islands have less infrastructure. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Real Hawaii conditions

  • Remote valleys & north shores: Hawaii's dramatic terrain means signal can drop quickly once you leave paved roads. The Na Pali Coast, Waimanu Valley, and similar remote areas have little to no coverage. Download offline maps before heading into wilderness areas.
  • Active volcano zones: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island has limited coverage in remote lava fields and lower-elevation areas near Kilauea. The visitor centre and main access roads typically maintain some signal.
  • Inter-island travel: The eSIM covers all Hawaiian islands since they're part of the US national network, but coverage quality varies by island. Molokai and Lanai have fewer towers and more limited signal compared to Oahu and Maui.

One eSIM, all of the US

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Hawaii?

At Honolulu (HNL) there's a Hawaii SIM Card kiosk right past US Customs in the international arrivals area, selling T-Mobile and Verizon prepaid plans from ~$35. One thing to know: it closes at 1:00 PM. Most transpacific flights arrive in the afternoon or evening, so you'll likely find it shut. Maui (OGG), Kona (KOA) and Kauai (LIH) are small airports with no confirmed SIM retail. Hawaii runs on standard US networks, so a travel eSIM like Ohayu works on all islands - install before your flight and after landing it can connect you to supported networks like T-Mobile or AT&T.

Any ID required for a prepaid SIM?

None. The US does not register prepaid lines, in Hawaii or anywhere else, and buying an eSIM requires no identity check. Worth knowing before a long flight - there is nothing to arrange on arrival.

Troubleshooting

Why isn't my eSIM working in Hawaii?

On the Road to Hana or in a valley on Kauai there are long unserved stretches. Failing that, the fix is usually in your SIM settings: Ohayu as the data line, roaming enabled, then an Airplane mode cycle. If that does not do it, chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
