Coverage and network

Coverage between the mountains

Mexico mobile networks

Monterrey is Mexico's industrial capital and its wealthiest large city, and it is well covered across the metropolitan area. It sits in a bowl surrounded by the Sierra Madre Oriental, and the mountains are what shape the gaps.

Monterrey, specifically

  • San Pedro Garza García and the centre: The strongest coverage in the metro area. San Pedro is the wealthiest municipality in the country and it shows.
  • Cerro de la Silla and the sierra: The saddle-shaped peak that defines the skyline shadows signal on its far side. The canyons - Huasteca, Matacanes - lose it quickly once you are down in them, and Matacanes is a serious canyoning route where you will be offline for hours.
  • The industrial belt: Santa Catarina and Apodaca are covered as business infrastructure.
  • Towards the US border: Coverage holds up to Nuevo Laredo and Reynosa. A Mexican plan stops at the border - it does not cover Texas, which is a common assumption on this route and a costly one.
  • Grutas de García and the caves: The cable car and the entrance are covered. Inside the caves, nothing - it is limestone and deep.

Mexico, not the United States

The plan covers all of Mexico. Monterrey is about two hours from the Texas border and the US needs its own plan - crossing does not extend this one.

Arriving in Monterrey

Airport Wi-Fi at MTY

Mariano Escobedo has free terminal Wi-Fi. A lot of arrivals here are business travellers connecting to industrial parks rather than the city centre, so knowing where you are actually going is worth doing online.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Does the plan work across the border in Texas?

No. Monterrey is around two hours from Nuevo Laredo and plenty of trips here involve a border run, but a Mexican plan ends at the crossing and the US is a separate purchase. Your phone will not warn you before it starts looking for a different network.

Where to buy a SIM card in Monterrey?

Telcel and AT&T outlets across the metro area and in the malls. Since January 2026 a Mexican line has to be tied to an identity record linked to the biometric CURP system, which a visitor cannot easily do - a roaming plan avoids the question by not being a Mexican line.

Is there signal in the canyons?

Not much. La Huasteca has coverage near the entrance and loses it as the walls close in, and Matacanes is a full day of canyoning with no service at all. If you are going down there with a guide, treat it as offline and leave your plan with someone.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Monterrey?

In a canyon or inside the Grutas de García there is nothing to reach. If you have crossed into Texas you are outside the plan entirely. Otherwise select Ohayu for mobile data, enable roaming, and cycle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
