Coverage and network
Coverage along the Riviera Maya
Mexico mobile networks
Playa del Carmen is the middle of the Riviera Maya and the coastal strip is among the better-covered parts of Mexico, because the tourism industry depends on it. What changes is anything involving water or limestone.

Playa del Carmen, specifically
- Fifth Avenue and the beach zone: Consistent 4G with 5G in places. Busy in the evenings, which slows uploads on the main strip.
- The Cozumel ferry: Covered at both terminals and for most of the 45-minute crossing - the channel is narrow enough that one side or the other usually reaches.
- Cenotes: The gap that matters here. Cenotes are flooded limestone sinkholes, often with overhanging rock or fully enclosed, and coverage inside them ranges from weak to none. The car parks have signal; the water usually does not. Download directions before you drive out - the turnoffs are unmarked.
- The all-inclusive resorts south of town: Covered, though the resorts sit in large grounds and reception in a room at the far end of a property can be worse than at the lobby. Resort Wi-Fi is the indoor answer.
- Tulum and Akumal, down the highway: The 307 highway holds signal the length of the coast. The jungle roads inland off it lose it quickly.
All of Mexico
One plan covers the whole country - the Riviera Maya, Yucatán, Mexico City. Belize is two hours south and is not included.

Arriving for Playa
Cancún airport and the transfer
Almost everyone lands at Cancún, an hour north, which has free terminal Wi-Fi. The transfer is where data pays for itself: the arrivals hall is a gauntlet of people offering rides and timeshare pitches, and having a booked, tracked transfer on your phone is the simplest way through it.

Frequently asked questions
Will I have signal at the cenotes?
At the entrance and the car park usually; in the water often not. Cenotes are collapsed limestone caves, and the enclosed ones have no coverage at all once you are below the rim. The bigger practical issue is getting there - the turnoffs off the 307 are poorly marked, so download the route rather than trusting a live map.
Where to buy a SIM card in Playa del Carmen?
Telcel outlets along Fifth Avenue and in the Plaza Las Américas. Mexican lines have needed identity registration tied to the biometric CURP system since January 2026, which visitors cannot practically complete - a roaming plan is not a Mexican line and is unaffected.
Does the plan cover the Cozumel ferry and Belize?
Cozumel yes - it is Mexican, and the crossing mostly holds signal. Belize no; it is a separate country a couple of hours south and needs its own plan, which catches out people doing the Chetumal run.
eSIM not working in Playa del Carmen?
Down inside a cenote there is nothing to find, and deep in a large resort a room can be weaker than the lobby. Otherwise make Ohayu the mobile data line, allow roaming, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
