Coverage and network
Coverage bay, sierra and the boat-only villages
Mexico mobile networks
Puerto Vallarta runs along the Bay of Banderas with the Sierra Madre rising directly behind it, and the coverage divides on exactly that line. The town and the hotel zone are fine. Behind and south of it, less so.

Puerto Vallarta, specifically
- Zona Romántica, Centro, the Malecón: Reliable coverage through the town and along the seafront.
- The hotel zone and Nuevo Vallarta: Well covered, including the marina and the resort strip north into Nayarit.
- Yelapa and the boat-only villages: South of Boca de Tomatlán the coast has no road, and the villages - Yelapa, Quimixto, Las Ánimas - are reached by water taxi. Coverage there is limited and in places absent. Yelapa was famously off-grid for years; do not assume it works.
- The sierra behind town: The road up to San Sebastián del Oeste climbs hard and loses signal on the switchbacks. The mountain towns themselves have service.
- Whale watching and bay tours: Coverage holds across much of the bay because it is ringed by settlements. Trips out to the Marietas islands go quiet.
All of Mexico
The plan covers the whole country, so Vallarta, Guadalajara inland and anywhere else on the trip run on one eSIM.

Arriving in Puerto Vallarta
Airport Wi-Fi at PVR
Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz has free terminal Wi-Fi and sits close to the hotel zone. As at Cancún, the arrivals hall has a well-earned reputation for timeshare touts, and walking through it with a booked transfer on your phone is the easy way past.

Frequently asked questions
Is there coverage in Yelapa and the southern villages?
Limited, and in places none. The coast south of Boca de Tomatlán has no road at all, so those villages are reached by water taxi and were off the grid entirely until relatively recently. Arrange your return boat before you go rather than planning to call for one.
Where to buy a SIM card in Puerto Vallarta?
Telcel outlets in the Zona Romántica and the malls. Mexico has required lines to be tied to an identity record linked to the biometric CURP system since January 2026 - not something a visitor can complete, and not something a roaming plan is subject to.
Does coverage reach Sayulita and San Pancho?
Yes, both are covered - they are in Nayarit, about 40 minutes north, and the same Mexican plan applies with no state boundary to worry about. The surf beaches themselves are fine; the dirt roads to the quieter ones are patchier.
eSIM not working in Puerto Vallarta?
In the boat-only villages south of Boca de Tomatlán, or up a sierra switchback, gaps are real. In town, check Ohayu is your data line with roaming on, then cycle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
