Plan details
How much mobile data you need
What's the best eSIM for Yucatan?
A few days in Mérida – 3 GB
Maps, colonial centre, food.
The peninsula for two weeks – 10 GB
Ruins, cenotes, the coast.
Yucatán plus the Caribbean – 20 GB
Mérida to Tulum on one plan.
Working from Mérida – 50 GB
A growing remote-work base.
Coverage and network
Coverage across the peninsula
Mexico mobile networks
Yucatán state is flat limestone with Mérida at its centre, and coverage follows the highways between the colonial towns. It is more consistent than the mountainous parts of Mexico and thinner than the Caribbean coast, because there is less money in it.

Yucatán, specifically
- Mérida: Well covered across the centre and the northern suburbs. A large and growing remote-work population lives here, which has pushed the network along.
- Chichén Itzá and Uxmal: Both sites are covered - Chichén Itzá takes very large numbers and slows at midday when the tour buses converge. Uxmal is quieter and fine.
- The cenote towns: Valladolid, Cuzamá and Homún are covered in the towns. The cenotes themselves are underground limestone chambers with nothing inside, and the tracks out to them are unsigned.
- The Gulf coast: Progreso and Celestún have service. The Celestún flamingo boat trips run into the mangrove channels and lose it.
- The Puuc route and the interior: The smaller Mayan sites along the Puuc road have coverage at the sites and gaps between them. The Ruta de los Conventos villages are thinly served.
All of Mexico
The plan covers the whole country, so Yucatán state, Quintana Roo along the coast and the rest of Mexico all run on one eSIM.

Arriving in Yucatán
Mérida airport, and the Tren Maya
Mérida's Manuel Crescencio Rejón airport has free terminal Wi-Fi and is close to the city. The Tren Maya now links the peninsula's main sites, and checking live schedules for a service this new is a good reason to arrive connected.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Yucatán?
Telcel in Mérida and the larger towns; the villages have little. Under the framework in force since January 2026 a Mexican line must be tied to an identity record linked to the biometric CURP system, which is not realistic for a visitor - a roaming plan is outside that.
Is there coverage at Chichén Itzá?
Yes, across the site. It slows in the late morning when the coach parties from the coast arrive together - a few thousand people on one plaza is more than the local cells enjoy. Early morning is better for both the queues and the data.
Do the cenote tours have signal?
At the surface, mostly. Inside the cenotes, no - they are underground limestone chambers. The bigger problem is finding them: the tracks off the highway to places like Cuzamá and Homún are unmarked, so save the route offline before you leave Mérida.
eSIM not working in Yucatán?
Underground in a cenote or out in the Celestún mangroves there is nothing in range. On the highways, confirm Ohayu is selected for mobile data with roaming allowed, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
