Coverage and network

Coverage and the heat

United States mobile networks

Phoenix and Tucson are well covered and the interstates hold up. Two things are particular to Arizona: the canyon country genuinely has no service in the places people most want to photograph, and in summer the phone itself becomes the problem. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Global rank

#10 of 98

Arizona, specifically

  • Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tucson: Strong 5G across all three and along the I-10 and I-17 corridors.
  • Grand Canyon: There is patchy service at the South Rim village and the main viewpoints. Drop below the rim and it stops - the inner canyon, Phantom Ranch and the river have nothing.
  • Summer heat is the real limit: At 45C and above, phones throttle and shut themselves down to protect the battery, usually while running Maps on a car mount in direct sun. That is a hardware limit, not a network one, and no plan fixes it. Keep the phone shaded and out of the windscreen.
  • Navajo Nation and Monument Valley: Coverage across the northeast of the state is sparse and inconsistent. Antelope Canyon and Page are better; the long roads between are not.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Arizona?

Sky Harbor has kiosks, and carrier stores are everywhere in Phoenix and Tucson. Retail undercuts the airport. An eSIM avoids the stop.

Do I have to show ID for a prepaid SIM in Arizona?

No. This is a federal matter and there is no requirement, in Arizona or anywhere else in the country. Buying an eSIM online involves no check either.

Will it work at the Grand Canyon?

On the South Rim, partly - the village and main viewpoints have patchy service. Below the rim there is none at all, so anyone hiking to Phantom Ranch or rafting the Colorado should treat the trip as offline and download maps first. The North Rim is thinner again.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Arizona?

In canyon country there may be no coverage to find. In summer, also check the phone has not thermally throttled - if it is hot to hold, cool it down before troubleshooting the eSIM. Otherwise confirm the Ohayu eSIM is your data line and roaming is on, then cycle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
