Greece mobile networks
Greece sits 28th globally at around 145 Mbps, and Athens measures higher again at about 173 Mbps. All three operators run 5G across the basin. The city is where Greek coverage is at its best - the islands vary, and the sea between them does not count.

Athens, specifically
- Plaka, Monastiraki, Koukaki: Strong 5G right up the slopes below the Acropolis.
- The Acropolis itself: Covered, but it takes several million visitors a year and the mid-morning crush on the Propylaea steps slows uploads. The view from Areopagus hill is the better place to post from.
- The metro: All three lines carry signal, including the deep archaeological stations. Line 3 out to the airport holds up the whole way.
- Piraeus: Well covered across all the gates, which matters because working out which of them your ferry leaves from is a genuine task. Signal drops once you are properly out of the harbour.
- Day trips: Delphi, Cape Sounion and Nafplio are covered in the towns and along the main roads. The mountain stretch of the Delphi road has gaps.
Greece, and the EU
One plan covers the whole of Greece - Athens, the Cyclades, Crete, the Dodecanese. As an EU member the same terms carry into Italy or Bulgaria if the trip continues.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Athens?
Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova have shops on Ermou and around Syntagma, and there are counters at the airport. Airport pricing is the usual markup, and you will need your passport wherever you buy.
Do I need ID to buy a prepaid SIM in Greece?
Yes. Greece is one of the EU states that requires every SIM to be registered against an identified owner, so the shop takes your passport details at the point of sale. It is a short process and staff in tourist areas do it all day.
Ohayu plans issue no Greek number, so there is nothing to register and no counter to visit.
Does one plan cover the islands as well as Athens?
Yes - it is one country and one plan. Santorini, Crete, Mykonos and the rest are all included, with no island supplement. What the plan cannot do is cover you mid-crossing: on a four-hour ferry through open water you will lose signal for long stretches regardless of provider.
eSIM not working in Athens?
In the middle of a ferry crossing there is no coverage to find. In the city, the fix is usually the data-line setting - Ohayu selected for mobile data, roaming allowed, then an Airplane mode toggle. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
