How much mobile data you need

What's the best eSIM for Crete?

  • A beach week – 3 GB

    Maps, tavernas, the odd upload.

  • Driving the island – 10 GB

    Two weeks, gorges, offline maps.

  • Crete and the Cyclades – 20 GB

    Ferry north on one plan.

  • A long stay – Unlimited

    Tethering from a villa.

Coverage and network

Coverage north coast versus the mountains

Greece mobile networks

Crete is big - 260 km end to end, with a mountain spine running most of its length. The north coast, where almost everyone stays, is well covered. The White Mountains and the south coast villages are a different proposition, and the gap between the two is wider here than on any other Greek island.

Crete, specifically

  • Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno: Solid 4G and 5G. The north coast highway between them holds signal the whole way.
  • The Samaria Gorge: Sixteen kilometres down a gorge with walls hundreds of metres high. Expect nothing for most of the walk. There is no exit halfway and the only way out is the boat from Agia Roumeli, so download the schedule before you start rather than planning to check it on the way down.
  • The White Mountains and the Lasithi plateau: Patchy. Villages have service, the roads between them come and go, and the higher you drive the less there is.
  • Elafonisi and Balos: Covered at the beaches themselves. The dirt track down to Balos loses it in places, which matters if you are relying on the map.
  • The south coast: Sfakia, Loutro and Agia Roumeli are small and served thinly. Loutro has no road at all - you arrive by boat - and coverage there is basic.

Crete and the rest of Greece

The plan covers all of Greece, so Crete and any onward island or the mainland all run on the same eSIM. EU roaming applies beyond that.

Arriving in Crete

Two airports, two networks

Crete's airports are run by different operators and the Wi-Fi differs accordingly. Chania is part of the Fraport concession; Heraklion is not, and its network is free but slow in high season - which is exactly when you will be using it.

Heraklion 'Nikos Kazantzakis' Airport (HER)
Airport Wifi Hotspot - free and unlimited, but noticeably slow in peak season
Chania Airport (CHQ)
Fraport-Free - free, browser welcome page, Fraport-operated

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Crete?

The operator shops are in Heraklion and Chania; the resort towns have franchise outlets with shorter hours. Bring your passport, since Greek lines have to be registered to a named person. Outside the two cities the choice narrows quickly.

Will I have signal in the Samaria Gorge?

For most of it, no. The gorge is 16 km long with very high walls and there is no useful coverage down there. It also has no midway exit - once you commit you walk to Agia Roumeli and leave by boat. Download the ferry times and the trail before you set off, and do not plan on calling anyone from inside.

Is the plan different for Crete than for mainland Greece?

No, it is the same Greek plan - one country, one price, islands included. Worth saying because Crete is large enough that people assume it is billed separately.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Crete?

In a gorge or up in the White Mountains there is often nothing in range at all. On the north coast, check that Ohayu is the line selected for mobile data and that roaming is on, then restart the radio with Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
