Santorini, specifically
- Fira, Imerovigli, Oia: Strong along the whole rim. The caldera-facing terraces get good signal because there is nothing between them and the masts.
- Oia at sunset: The single worst congestion on the island. Several thousand people funnel into the castle ruins for the same twenty minutes and everyone films it. Messages go, uploads do not. Post it later from your hotel.
- Cruise ship days: Up to four ships can be in the caldera at once, adding thousands of people who all reach for their phones in Fira between the cable car and the shops. Afternoon slowdowns are load, not a fault.
- The Fira to Oia cliff walk: Covered the whole way - about 10 km along the rim, never far from a village.
- Perissa, Kamari, Akrotiri: The flatter east and south are fine. The Akrotiri excavation site is indoors under a roof and can be weak inside.

Santorini's airport uses the standard Fraport network. The old port at Athinios, where the ferries dock, has nothing usable - and that is where you will be trying to find your transfer among a crowd of drivers holding signs.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card on Santorini?
Fira has operator franchise outlets, and that is about it - Oia and the smaller villages do not. Hours are seasonal and passport registration applies as it does anywhere in Greece. On an island this small the trip into Fira is the real cost.
Why is data so slow in Oia at sunset?
Because a few thousand people are packed onto one clifftop filming the same thing through one or two cells. It is congestion, not coverage - text messages will get out while video uploads stall. Nothing any provider can do about it; wait until you are back at the hotel.
Does the plan work on the ferry to Naxos or Ios?
Near the ports, yes. In open water between the islands you will lose it, and the Cyclades crossings are long enough for that to be an hour or more. Download anything you want for the journey before you board.
