Coverage and network

Coverage four islands, one plan

Spain mobile networks

The Balearics are a Spanish autonomous community, so the same operators and the same plan apply. The four islands differ enormously in size and development, and coverage tracks that - Mallorca is a small country, Formentera is a sandbar with a village.

The Balearics, specifically

  • Palma and the Mallorcan bays: Well covered. Palma is a proper city of 400,000 and the network reflects it.
  • Menorca: Covered in Mahón, Ciutadella and the resort areas. The Camí de Cavalls coastal path around the island has gaps on the wilder northern stretches.
  • Ibiza and Formentera: Both covered in the towns and along the roads. The Formentera ferry is a half-hour hop that mostly holds signal.
  • Summer load: The Balearics take several million visitors between June and September, and the beach and port areas slow at peak. It is congestion rather than coverage.
  • Inter-island ferries: The Palma to Ibiza run is several hours across open water and loses signal in the middle. Formentera and Menorca crossings are shorter.

The Balearics are Spain

All four islands are part of Spain, so one plan covers them, the mainland and the Canaries. EU roaming carries it onward.

Arriving in the Balearics

Airport Wi-Fi at PMI, IBZ and MAH

All three island airports run the AENA network with the same browser sign-in. Palma is one of the busiest airports in Europe in August, and the transfer queues are the bottleneck rather than the Wi-Fi.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Is one plan enough for all four islands?

Yes. They are a single Spanish region, so there is no island supplement and no second purchase for hopping between them - or for continuing to the mainland afterwards.

What ID do I need for a local Spanish SIM?

A passport, or an EU national ID card. Physical SIMs in Spain are registered in store against a document, which takes a few minutes. In the islands the operator shops are concentrated in Palma and Ibiza Town, so it is an errand rather than a five-minute stop.

Do the ferries between islands keep coverage?

The short ones largely do - Ibiza to Formentera, Mallorca to Menorca. Palma to Ibiza is several hours of open water and you will lose it for a long stretch in the middle.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in the Balearics?

Mid-crossing on a long ferry there is nothing in range, and in August the beach areas are simply congested. Otherwise make Ohayu the data line, enable roaming, then cycle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
