The Canaries are part of Spain for network purposes, so you get Spanish operators and Spanish speeds. Tenerife's wrinkle is vertical: a 3,700 m volcano in the middle of the island, and coverage that behaves very differently depending on which side of it you are on. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

South, north, and up the mountain
- The southern resorts: Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas are densely covered. This is the busiest part of the island and the network reflects that.
- Santa Cruz and the green north: Fine in the capital and Puerto de la Cruz. La Laguna's old streets are narrow enough to weaken it indoors.
- Teide: The road up and the cable car base station have signal. Above that it falls away, and the summit trail has effectively none. Download the permit and route beforehand.
- Anaga and Masca: The laurel forest ridges and the Masca gorge are the island's real dead zones. Beautiful, and genuinely offline.
Canaries and mainland
The same plan works on mainland Spain and the other islands, so island-hopping to Gran Canaria or flying on to Madrid needs nothing extra.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Tenerife?
Movistar and Vodafone have kiosks at both airports and shops in the resort towns and Santa Cruz. Choice is thinner outside the tourist areas. An eSIM removes the errand.
Do I need to show ID to buy a SIM card in Spain?
Yes, Spain requires ID registration for prepaid SIMs and will want your passport. Ohayu plans are data-only with no Spanish number, so registration does not apply.
Will it work on the Teide summit trail?
Not reliably. There is signal on the access road and around the cable car base, but it drops as you climb and the summit path has essentially none. Same for the Masca gorge and the Anaga ridges. Download offline maps before setting out.
eSIM not working in Tenerife?
If you are up Teide or in Anaga, that is terrain rather than a fault. Elsewhere, check the Ohayu eSIM is your data line, roaming is enabled for it, and toggle Airplane mode once. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
