Coverage and network

Coverage across seven islands

Spain mobile networks

The Canaries sit 100 km off the African coast but are Spanish territory and part of the EU, so the same three operators serve them on the same terms. The islands are volcanic and steep, and coverage divides between the developed coasts and the interiors.

The Canaries, specifically

  • The resort coasts: Playa de las Américas, Las Palmas, Corralejo, Playa Blanca - all thoroughly covered. This is where the network investment went.
  • Teide and the high interior: The national park road and the cable car base have signal; the summit and the crater floor are inconsistent. Teide is 3,715 m and the road up crosses a lava plateau with little reason for masts.
  • The barrancos: Every island is cut by deep ravines, and coverage goes as you descend into one - the Masca gorge on Tenerife and the Barranco de las Vacas on Gran Canaria both do it.
  • Inter-island ferries: Signal holds near the ports and drops mid-channel. The Tenerife to La Gomera run is short; La Palma and El Hierro are further out.
  • La Gomera, La Palma, El Hierro: The smaller western islands are covered in the towns and much less in the laurel forest and the volcanic interiors. El Hierro has a few thousand residents.

The Canaries are Spain

All seven islands are part of Spain, so a Spain plan covers them and the mainland with nothing extra. EU roaming applies, though the islands sit outside the EU VAT area for tax purposes.

Airport Wi-Fi across the islands

Every Canarian airport runs the same AENA network, free after a browser sign-in. Most flights are charters arriving in waves, so the terminals and the transfer desks get busy together.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Do the Canaries need a separate eSIM from Spain?

No. They are a Spanish autonomous community and part of the EU, so a Spain plan applies unchanged and covers the mainland too. The islands do sit outside the EU VAT area, which affects what you pay for goods rather than how your phone works.

Which island has the best coverage?

Tenerife and Gran Canaria are the best served, being the most populated. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are solid along the coasts. La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro are covered where people live and thin in the forests and lava fields between.

Is there signal on Teide?

At the cable car base station and along the park road, generally. Higher up and out on the crater floor it is unreliable, and the summit permit walk should not be planned around a phone. Download the map - the park is large and the lava landscape is disorienting.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in the Canaries?

Down in a barranco or mid-channel on a ferry there is nothing to reach. On the coast, set Ohayu as your mobile data line, allow roaming, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
