Spain mobile networks

Mallorca is much bigger than most visitors realise - an hour and a half end to end - and it splits into a well-covered coastal ring and a mountain range along the northwest. The Serra de Tramuntana is where the map goes quiet.

Mallorca, specifically

  • Palma and the southern bays: Consistent 5G. The old town's narrow lanes dip briefly, as old towns do.
  • The Serra de Tramuntana: The mountain villages - Deià, Valldemossa, Sóller - have coverage. The road between them, and the Sa Calobra descent with its 270-degree hairpin, lose signal on the shadowed side of ridges. This is also the island's cycling country, where a working map matters.
  • The Coves del Drach and Hams: Nothing inside. They are limestone caverns well below ground, and the boat-and-concert routine down there runs on a schedule rather than a phone.
  • Cap de Formentor: The road out along the peninsula is exposed and mostly covered, with gaps behind the headlands. It is a slow, busy drive in summer with restricted access at peak times.
  • Es Trenc and the quieter beaches: Covered at the car parks and along the tracks in. The dune paths themselves are fine.

Mallorca and the rest of Spain

A Spain plan covers Mallorca, the other Balearics and the mainland on the same terms, with EU roaming beyond.

Arriving in Mallorca

Airport Wi-Fi at PMI

Palma runs the AENA network with a browser sign-in. In peak season this is one of Europe's busiest airports and arrivals stack up, so having a transfer booked and trackable before you land is worth the trouble.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Mallorca?

Operator shops in Palma - the Porto Pi and FAN centres - and a counter at the airport. Spain registers physical SIMs against an ID document, so bring your passport. Outside Palma the choice narrows fast.

Is there coverage in the Tramuntana?

In the villages, yes. On the roads between them it comes and goes with the ridges, and the Sa Calobra descent has dead stretches. If you are cycling - and a lot of people come here specifically to - download the route rather than relying on live navigation on a mountain road.

Does the plan cover the caves?

No signal reaches inside the Coves del Drach or dels Hams; they are deep limestone chambers. The visitor centres above are covered. Buy your slot in advance, because the tours run on fixed times.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Mallorca?

Underground in the caves, or on a Tramuntana hairpin, expect nothing. On the coast, confirm Ohayu is selected for mobile data with roaming on, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
