How much mobile data you need
What's the best eSIM for Boston?
Long weekend – 3 GB
Walking directions and the Freedom Trail.

Navigation, calls, a Cape day trip.
Boston and New York – 20 GB
Both cities by Acela.
Working from Seaport – Unlimited
Tethering a laptop.
Coverage and network
Coverage on old streets
United States mobile networks
Boston is compact and walkable, which changes what you use data for - less long-haul driving, far more turn-by-turn walking on streets that were laid out before street grids existed. Coverage across the city handles that well. The older subway tunnels are the weak point. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Boston, specifically
- Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the North End: Strong throughout. The narrow colonial streets and brick rowhouses do not cause the problems you might expect.
- The T: Mixed. Newer stations and above-ground stretches are fine; the older Green Line tunnels and some deep Red Line sections still drop between stops.
- Cambridge and the river: Harvard, MIT and the Esplanade all covered, including on the bridges.
- Cape Cod and the islands: Covered along Route 6 and in the Cape towns. Ferries to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket lose signal mid-crossing.
New England and the rest
The plan runs nationwide, so a leaf-peeping drive into Vermont or a train to New York is already covered.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Boston?
Logan has kiosks, and there are carrier stores on Newbury Street and at the Prudential Center. City prices are better than the airport. An eSIM avoids the errand.
Do I need documents for a US prepaid SIM?
No documents, no registration - the US has never required it federally. An eSIM skips the store entirely.
Does it work on the T?
Partly, and it depends which line. Newer stations and surface running are fine. The older Green Line tunnels and deeper Red Line sections still lose signal between stops, so a podcast will stall where a downloaded one would not. Every carrier has the same problem there.
eSIM not working in Boston?
Confirm the phone is pulling data from the Ohayu line rather than your home SIM, and that roaming is on for it. Then flip Airplane mode once. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
