Chennai, specifically
- T. Nagar, Mylapore, Egmore: Well covered. The Kapaleeshwarar temple complex is stone and weak inside, fine in the courtyards.
- Marina Beach: One of the longest urban beaches in the world and busy every evening. Coverage is fine along it; the crowd at weekends slows uploads.
- The OMR / Rajiv Gandhi Salai corridor: Chennai's IT belt, and among the best-covered stretches in the city - 5G throughout, because the offices demand it.
- The metro: Both lines carry signal in the tunnels. The elevated sections are obviously fine.
- Cyclone season: October to December brings cyclones off the Bay of Bengal. Networks generally hold, but flooding and power cuts take individual cells down, and the 2015 floods are still the local benchmark for how bad it can get. Keep offline maps in that window.

Where to buy a SIM card in Chennai?
Jio and Airtel stores across the city and counters at the airport. Either way a foreign passport goes into the manual verification queue, so the SIM will not work the moment you buy it.
How long does Indian SIM verification take for a foreigner?
Commonly a few hours, sometimes up to a day - your passport and visa are reviewed by a person rather than checked instantly against Aadhaar the way a resident's ID is. Is coverage affected by cyclone season?
