Kerala, specifically
- Kochi, Trivandrum, Kozhikode: Good 4G and 5G across the cities. Fort Kochi and the Jewish Quarter are fine.
- The backwaters: Alleppey and Kumarakom have coverage, and the main canals hold a signal because there are villages along most of them. A houseboat that moors overnight in a quiet channel can drop to very little - ask the operator where they stop if it matters.
- Munnar and the tea hills: The towns have service. The plantation roads wind through valleys where it comes and goes, and the higher viewpoints are hit and miss.
- Periyar and Wayanad: Wildlife reserves with thin coverage by design. Guided walks go out of range.
- Monsoon: Kerala gets the southwest monsoon first and hardest, roughly June to August. Expect power cuts to take cells down locally and roads to flood.

Will I have signal on a houseboat in the backwaters?
On the main canals near Alleppey and Kumarakom, generally yes - there are villages along the banks. The catch is the overnight mooring: boats often tie up in a quiet side channel where coverage is much weaker. If you need to be reachable, ask where the boat stops before you book.
What do I need to buy a local SIM in Kerala?
The standard Indian requirements - passport, visa, an Indian address, and a wait for manual verification because foreign documents are checked by a person rather than instantly. Ohayu carries no Indian number, so it activates without any of that.
Does coverage reach Munnar and the tea estates?
In the towns, yes. On the plantation roads it drops in and out with the valleys, and some of the high viewpoints have nothing. The roads are narrow and slow, so download your route before you leave Kochi rather than relying on live navigation.
