Kolkata, specifically
- Park Street, BBD Bagh, New Market: Solid coverage. The colonial-era buildings are big but not dense enough to cause trouble.
- The metro: India's oldest underground, running since 1984, and the North-South line is covered. The newer river tunnel under the Hooghly is the deepest section and the most likely to drop.
- Howrah Bridge and the ferry ghats: Covered on both banks and on the river crossing - the Hooghly is narrow enough that you never leave range.
- Durga Puja: The city's defining festival, and for those days the pandal crowds are the densest gatherings you will encounter in India. Networks are overwhelmed in the busiest neighbourhoods; agree meeting points in advance.
- The Sundarbans: Assume long stretches with nothing. The mangrove delta has few permanent settlements and boat trips run for hours between them. Download everything before you leave the city.

Where to buy a SIM card in Kolkata?
Stores across the city and desks at the airport. As anywhere in India, a foreign passport means manual verification and a wait of hours before the line carries traffic.
Will I have signal in the Sundarbans?
For much of a trip, no. The delta is mangrove forest with very few permanent settlements, and the boat routes run for hours between them. This is a genuine offline stretch - download maps, tickets and anything you need to read, and tell people at home you will be out of contact.
Does the Kolkata metro have coverage?
Mostly. It is India's oldest metro and the main north-south line carries a signal. The newest section runs in a tunnel under the Hooghly river, which is the deepest part of the system and where you are most likely to lose it for a stretch.
