India mobile networks
India ranks 37th globally at about 130 Mbps, which surprises people who have not been recently - Jio and Airtel have built 5G out fast. Mumbai measures around 112 Mbps, slightly below the national figure, largely because of how many people share each cell.

Mumbai, specifically
- South Mumbai - Colaba, Fort, Marine Drive: Strong 5G. Marine Drive in the evening is busy but holds up.
- The suburban rail: Coverage along the lines is fine; the problem is physical. Peak-hour local trains are packed to a degree that makes getting a phone out of your pocket genuinely difficult, let alone using it.
- Bandra, Andheri, Powai: Well covered. The Powai and BKC business districts are among the better-served parts of the city.
- Dharavi and the dense central wards: Covered, but these are among the most densely populated square kilometres on earth and cells are heavily loaded. Data works, speeds vary hour to hour.
- Monsoon: June to September brings flooding that closes roads and stops trains. Networks mostly stay up, but power cuts take individual cells down and everyone tries to call at once. Worth having offline maps in monsoon season.
All of India
One plan covers the whole country - Mumbai, Delhi, Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan - with no circle boundaries to worry about.

Arriving in Mumbai
Airport Wi-Fi needs an Indian number
This is the thing to know about arriving in India: the free airport Wi-Fi authenticates by sending an OTP to an Indian mobile number, which you will not have. Foreign visitors have to go to an information desk with a passport to get a code. Landing with data already working skips all of it.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need ID to buy a SIM card in India?
Yes, and it is the most involved process of any major destination. Every Indian line requires KYC verification, and foreigners cannot use the Aadhaar-based instant route that residents get - you go into a manual queue instead.
You will need your passport, a valid Indian visa, and an Indian address (a hotel booking is accepted). Activation then takes anywhere from two hours to a day while a person reviews the documents, and an airport tourist SIM typically runs ₹1,000-2,500 for a 28-day pack. An Ohayu plan needs none of this - no Indian number is issued, so there is no KYC step and nothing to wait for.
Where to buy a SIM card in Mumbai?
Jio and Airtel have counters at the airport and stores across the city. The airport is convenient but expensive, and either way you are waiting for manual verification to clear before the SIM works.
Is Indian mobile data actually fast?
Faster than its reputation. India sits 37th worldwide at around 130 Mbps, and the 5G rollout since 2022 has been quick and wide. Mumbai comes in a little under the national average at about 112 Mbps - not because the network is poor but because of the sheer number of people on each cell.
eSIM not working in Mumbai?
During monsoon flooding, individual cells go down with the power and everyone tries to connect at once. Otherwise it is usually the data-line setting: Ohayu selected for mobile data, roaming enabled, then an Airplane mode toggle. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
