    Maps, music listings, photos.

  • A week – 10 GB

    Navigation and calls.

  • Gulf Coast drive – 20 GB

New Orleans to Houston or Florida.

  • Festival week – Unlimited

Tethering, with the crowd caveat above.

Coverage and network

Coverage in the Quarter and the swamp

United States mobile networks

New Orleans is small, dense and mostly walkable, so coverage in the parts you will actually spend time in is good. The two things worth planning around are festival crowds and the water beyond the city. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

New Orleans, specifically

  • French Quarter, Marigny, Garden District: Solid throughout, including inside most bars and the older buildings on Royal and Bourbon.
  • Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest: Parade routes and festival grounds saturate badly. On a big parade day along St Charles, expect messages to send late and photos to stall. This hits every network - agree a meeting point rather than relying on a phone.
  • Streetcars: Coverage the length of the St Charles and Canal lines.
  • Bayou and swamp tours: Once you are out past the levees into the wetlands, service drops off fast. Most tour boats have nothing.

Louisiana and beyond

The plan runs nationwide, so a drive along the Gulf to Texas or Florida is covered.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in New Orleans?

MSY has a kiosk, and there are carrier stores on Canal Street and in the suburbs. An eSIM avoids the trip, and the airport Wi-Fi is slow enough that installing beforehand is worth it.

Is ID required for a prepaid SIM card?

Not in the US. Nothing is registered against your name for prepaid, and an eSIM purchase involves no verification.

Will data work during Mardi Gras?

It will work, but expect it to be slow at the worst moments. Parade routes concentrate enormous crowds into a few blocks and the cells there saturate, so messages queue and uploads stall. Every network struggles equally. The practical answer is to agree a physical meeting point with your group before the parade starts rather than assuming you can coordinate by phone.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in New Orleans?

During a parade or festival, slow is congestion rather than a fault. Out in the bayou there may be no coverage. Otherwise open your SIM settings, make Ohayu the line used for mobile data with roaming enabled, and toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
