Coverage and network

Coverage in a very old city

Italy mobile networks

Italy sits mid-table in Europe for mobile speed, and Rome performs about as you would expect from that. The thing that actually shapes your experience here is not the network, it is the masonry - two thousand years of stone between you and the nearest tower. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Rome, specifically

  • Outdoors in the centro storico: No real problem. The Colosseum, the Forum, Trevi and Piazza Navona are all open sky and well served.
  • Inside the old buildings: Different story. Metre-thick travertine and tufa kill signal, so churches, the lower Vatican Museum galleries and older palazzi drop to nothing. Walking toward a window or a courtyard fixes it.
  • Metro A, B and C: Signal in the stations, gone in the tunnels between them. Rome's metro is only three lines, so you are rarely underground for long.
  • Ostia, Tivoli, the Castelli: Day trips out are covered along the rail lines and main roads, thinner on the country roads between the hill towns.

The whole peninsula

The plan runs nationwide - Florence, Venice, the Amalfi coast - so a multi-city Italy trip needs one purchase, not four.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Rome?

TIM and Vodafone have stores in Fiumicino arrivals and across the centre. Expect to pay noticeably more at the airport than in town, roughly €25-40 for a basic tourist SIM. An eSIM avoids the counter entirely.

Do I need to show ID to buy a SIM card in Italy?

Yes. Italian law requires ID registration for every prepaid SIM, and as a visitor that means your passport, photocopied at the shop. Ohayu plans are data-only with no Italian number issued, so that registration does not apply.

Will it work inside St Peter's and the Vatican Museums?

Partly. The open areas and St Peter's Square are fine. Deep inside the galleries and the basilica the stone blocks it, which affects every network equally - the Vatican is not a coverage blackspot so much as a very thick building.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Rome?

If you are indoors in an old building, step outside before troubleshooting anything - that is the usual cause here. Otherwise: confirm the Ohayu eSIM is your selected data line, that data roaming is switched on for it, and toggle Airplane mode once to force a fresh network search. Chat support and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
