Coverage and network

Coverage coast, interior and a volcano

Italy mobile networks

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and it takes four hours to drive end to end. The coast road and the cities are well covered. The interior - the Madonie, the Nebrodi, the empty middle around Enna - is the thinnest part of Italy we cover.

Sicily, specifically

  • Palermo, Catania, Syracuse: Solid 4G and 5G in all three. Palermo's old quarters have the usual narrow-street dropouts.
  • Mount Etna: Covered at the Rifugio Sapienza base and the cable car station. Higher up on the summit craters it is unreliable, and the lava fields have nothing. Etna is also an active volcano whose access changes with activity - check locally on the day rather than relying on last week's information.
  • The interior: Between Enna, Caltanissetta and the Madonie the towns have service and the roads between them come and go. Some of the mountain routes are genuinely empty for long stretches.
  • The Aeolian and Egadi islands: Lipari, Vulcano and Favignana are covered in the ports and towns. The crossings lose signal in open water, and Stromboli is minimal.
  • The ferry from Calabria: The Messina crossing is 20 minutes and short enough to hold a signal from one side or the other most of the way.

Sicily and the rest of Italy

The plan covers all of Italy, so Sicily, the mainland and Sardinia all run on the same eSIM. It does not reach Malta, which is 90 km south and its own country.

Arriving in Sicily

Two main airports

Palermo and Catania both have free terminal Wi-Fi and sit on opposite ends of the island, three hours apart. Which one you fly into shapes the whole trip, so it is worth being online while you sort out the hire car.

Palermo Falcone-Borsellino (PMO)
Free terminal Wi-Fi - browser sign-in, 35 km west of the city
Catania Fontanarossa (CTA)
Free terminal Wi-Fi - closest airport to Etna and Taormina

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Sicily?

Operator shops in Palermo, Catania and the larger towns; passport needed, since Italian lines are registered to a named person. In the interior villages there is often nothing, so buy in a city if you want local prepaid.

Will I have signal on Etna?

At the Rifugio Sapienza base station and on the cable car, generally yes. Above that it is inconsistent and the lava fields have nothing at all. More importantly, Etna is active and access to the summit area opens and closes with the volcano - decide that with a guide on the day, not from a forecast.

Does an Italy plan cover Malta?

No. Malta is only 90 km from the Sicilian coast and there are ferries, but it is a separate country and needs its own plan. Both are in the EU, so the roaming terms are comparable - the plan itself is not shared.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Sicily?

In the mountainous interior or high on Etna the gaps are real. On the coast, the usual fix is one setting: Ohayu selected for mobile data, roaming allowed, then an Airplane mode toggle. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
