Coverage and network
Coverage, and the border
United States mobile networks
San Diego is straightforward: dense coverage across the city, the beaches and the North County corridor. The thing worth knowing has nothing to do with signal strength - it is that a US plan stops at the border, and San Ysidro is a 20-minute trolley ride from downtown. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

San Diego, specifically
- Downtown, Balboa Park, La Jolla: Strong throughout, including the zoo grounds and the cliffs at Torrey Pines.
- Crossing into Tijuana: This one catches people out. A US plan does not cover Mexico. Walk across at San Ysidro and your data stops, even though you are still on the trolley line you started on. You need a Mexico plan for that side, or you are on airport-Wi-Fi-and-hope.
- Beaches and the Coaster: Coverage runs the length of the coast rail line up to Oceanside, and on the Coronado ferry.
- Anza-Borrego and the backcountry: An hour east and the desert parks lose it. Julian and the mountain roads are patchy between towns.
Fifty states, one border
The plan works across the US, so LA and Vegas are covered. Mexico is a separate country and a separate plan.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in San Diego?
SAN has carrier kiosks, and there are AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon stores in Fashion Valley and Westfield UTC. Retail beats airport pricing. An eSIM saves the stop.
Will a store ask for ID for a prepaid SIM?
Not for the sale itself - there is no federal requirement. Some clerks ask for a ZIP code to fill a form field; anything works. An eSIM has no counter step at all.
Will my US eSIM work in Tijuana?
No. A US plan covers the United States only, and Mexico is a separate destination with a separate plan. This matters more in San Diego than anywhere else in the country, because the crossing at San Ysidro is a short trolley ride from downtown and thousands of visitors make the trip. If you are going over for the day, either buy a Mexico plan as well or plan to be offline until you are back.
eSIM not working in San Diego?
First check you have not crossed into Mexico - that is the most common cause here. Otherwise confirm the Ohayu eSIM is your selected data line and roaming is on for it, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
