Maps and rideshare.
A week driving – 10 GB
Long-distance navigation between cities.
Dallas, Austin, Houston – 20 GB
The triangle on one plan.
Festival or business week – Unlimited
Tethering, with the SXSW congestion caveat.
Coverage and network
Coverage over long distances
United States mobile networks
Texas is bigger than France, and that is the whole story of its coverage. The triangle between Dallas, Houston and San Antonio is well served and the interstates hold up. West of the Pecos, distances between towers start to show. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

The triangle versus west Texas
- Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio: Strong 5G in all four and across their suburbs. No issues with tethering or calls.
- I-35 and I-10: Continuous along the busy corridors. The far western run of I-10 toward El Paso has stretches where it drops to nothing.
- Big Bend and the Davis Mountains: Effectively offline. The park is larger than Rhode Island with almost no coverage, and the approach roads are sparse too.
- SXSW and big event weeks: Central Austin gets heavily congested during SXSW and ACL. It slows for everyone on every network, not just visitors.
A very large state, and 49 others
The plan runs nationwide, so a Texas trip that ends in New Orleans or Denver is already covered.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Texas?
All three big airports have carrier kiosks at a premium. Walmart, Target or H-E-B in town will be cheaper. An eSIM skips it.
Do Texas stores want ID for a prepaid SIM?
They do not need it. There is no federal prepaid registration requirement, so the sale is just a sale. An eSIM bypasses the counter entirely.
Will it work in Big Bend or on the drive to El Paso?
Big Bend, essentially no - the park is enormous and almost entirely without coverage, as are many of the approach roads. The western run of I-10 has long gaps too. Download offline maps, tell someone your route, and do not rely on a phone for emergencies out there.
eSIM not working in Texas?
In west Texas or Big Bend the likely answer is that there is no tower within range. Nearer a city, check the Ohayu eSIM is your data line, roaming is enabled, then cycle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
